He lived in Payton, Iowa, with his three brothers, Daniel Ryan, Sean Ryan, and James Ryan, and is the son of Mrs. Margaret Ryan. He has a wife and an unborn son. In 1942, he along with his brothers, James and Sean, surprised Daniel who was about to make love with his girlfriend Alice Jardine, which resulted in the barn nearly being burned down, due to Daniel attacking Sean and setting a lamp ablaze.
He later joined the Army that year, and was originally assigned to Able Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division in the same Company his brothers were in, but was later transferred to the 4th Infantry Division due to a law being passed to prevent the loss of all the sons of a family by preventing them from serving in small battles together. He was killed on Utah Beach on June 6th, 1944.
