Joe dropped with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division on D-Day, June 6, 1944, into Normandy France. He got seperated though, but eventually regrouped at one of the 506th DZ's.
When he was marching with his troopers,Captain John H. Miller came by asking for Private Ryan. A Paratrooper asked Joe if a Paratrooper named Michaelson "buddied up" with Private James Ryan. Joe said yes, and got Michaelson.
Joe then explained that the man had been significantly deafened due to having been caught in a grenade blast. After some miscommunication between the three, Michaelson told Miller where Ryan was. Joe's fate was left unknown.
