Esson was part of Company C led by Captain John H. Miller. On D-Day, June 6th,1944, Esson was deployed to Omaha Beach with Charlie Company, 2nd Rangers Battalion. Esson was only seen when the landing crafts came under fire from the German MG-42s in the coastal bunker. Captain Miller shouted for his men to jump into the water to evade enemy fire. Esson's exact fate was unknown, but he was likely killed by machine gunfire before he was able to jump overboard.
