Bowers was assigned to Company C, led by Captain John Miller. On D-Day June 6th, 1944, Bowers landed on Omaha Beach with Charlie Company, 2nd Rangers Battalion. The landing craft that he and his company were riding aboard came under a barrage of fire from German MG-42 in the Coastal Bunker. Bowers was killed by the machine gun fire before he was able to jump overboard with the other members of his company, being gunned down with three other soldiers.
